Legalization/Authentication of Documents
The Embassy provides legalisation services for documents intended for use in Nigeria by citizens and foreigners or for Nigerian citizens residing in Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Georgia. Legalisation confirms the authenticity of signatures, stamps, and the official capacity of the issuing authority. It does not validate the content of the document. Legalisation is required when a document issued in one country must be recognised in another.

PROCEDURE AND REQUIREMENTS FOR LEGALISATION
Requirements
- Duly completed application form (downloadable here)
- Original documents and a photocopy
- Valid Nigerian passport data page
- Evidence of prior authentication (host country’s institution or MFA Abuja)
- Appointment booking/confirmation. Book Now
- Evidence of payment for applicable consular fee (if legalisation is not undertaken in person at the Embassy)
Submission by Third Party
Applicants who are unable to appear in person may authorise a third party to submit documents on their behalf at the Embassy.
To use this option, the following additional documents must be provided:
Requirements
- A signed authorisation letter: from the applicant clearly stating the name of the authorised representative.
- Passport data page of the applicant.
- Passport data page or valid identification card of the third party,depending on the third party’s nationality and type of ID available.
Legalisation by Courier
Applicants who are unable to appear in person may submit their documents to the Embassy via courier. All documents and required supporting materials must be enclosed in the package, along with a pre-paid, self-addressed courier return label for the dispatch of the legalised documents.
Applicants must also include evidence of payment for legalisation services (transfer details downloadable here).
Applicants choosing the courier option are responsible for ensuring that:
- All documents submitted are accurate, complete, and properly authenticated as required.
- All requirements listed in the legalisation section are fully met.
- A valid pre-paid, self-addressed courier return label is included in the package.
