Renunciation of citizenship

Renunciation of Nigerian citizenship is governed by Section 29 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999, as amended). It is a voluntary process available to Nigerians of full age who wish to cease being citizens of Nigeria.

Competent Authority

The process is administered exclusively by the Federal Ministry of Interior (FMI) of Nigeria, through the Citizenship & Business Department.

Important: The Embassy does not process or approve renunciation applications. All applications must be submitted directly to the Federal Ministry of Interior in Abuja, either online through the Citizenship & Business Portal or in person.
